You have a new cable internet contract. Now you want to use your own FRITZ!Box? No problem. You decide which router you use. Here you will learn how to install it – and what our bridge mode offers you.

Technical Requirements

You cannot use every router for every cable internet plan. Therefore, check in advance if your own box is compatible with the plan.

Device requirements for plans with up to 500 Mbps download:

  • DOCSIS 3.0 compatible, e.g., FRITZ!Box 6590 and FRITZ!Box 6490
  • 24 download and 8 upload channels
  • IPv4 and IPv6 as well as Dual Stack Lite
  • SIP standard for telephony

Device requirements for plans with up to 1000 Mbps download:

  • DOCSIS 3.1 compatible, e.g., FRITZ!Box 6690, FRITZ!Box 6591, and FRITZ!Box 6660
  • 2 x 2 OFDM channels
  • Downward compatible with DOCSIS 3.0
  • 24 download and 8 upload channels (DOCSIS 3.0)

Setup in Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Hesse

You can set up your own box in 2 steps. Here’s how:


Activation:

  • Have your serial number and MAC address ready (you can find them on the back of your device)
  • Visit the website Activation of Own Cable Router
  • Enter data & security code, click Submit, and you’re done

Setup: Before starting the setup: Connect your FRITZ!Box to the power outlet, cable socket, and your computer.

Here’s how it works:

  • Go to http://fritz.box
  • Enter your FRITZ!Box password from the device underside and click Log In
  • The Internet Access menu isn’t there yet? Then click Internet > Access Data
  • Activate the Internet access option via the cable connection
  • Wait until the Power/Cable LED lights up permanently. This takes up to 10 minutes
  • Click Apply or Continue to save the settings
  • Restart your FRITZ!Box. This completes the setup of the internet access Your router is now set up. Do you also want to make calls through it? Find out how to do it here.

Setup in Other Federal States

Do you not live in Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, or Hesse? Then you need your activation code and customer number. Can’t find the code anymore? You can get a new code via MyVodafone.


Setup:

  • Have your customer number and activation code ready. Both can be found in your order confirmation
  • Connect your cable router to the power outlet, cable socket, and your computer
  • Open a browser, disable the pop-up blocker, and go to vodafone.de. You will be automatically redirected to the cable router activation page. If not, go to https://kabelmodemaktivieren.vodafone.de. Good to know: You can only access this page if your router is not activated. 
  • Enter your customer number and activation code. Then follow the instructions. Important: After activation, you will receive the SIP data and a one-time SIP password. Save this information well. You need the SIP data if you reset your cable router to factory settings and set it up again. Forgot your SIP password? Then generate a new SIP password via MyVodafone.
  • Restart the cable router: Unplug the power cord, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in Now you can also set up your telephone connection via the FRITZ!Box. Find out how to do it here.
