What exactly is return path interference?

Return path interference is a disruptive signal that affects the frequencies on which our customers' routers send data to our network. This can cause problems with internet and telephone services for other users, possibly even those living on different streets or in an entire district.

Such a disruptive signal can have various causes. It could be an outdated or broken electrical device, poorly shielded cables, or improperly grounded household installations. Defective home amplifiers or external radio signals can also be culprits.

The disruptive signal returns to the network via the return channel, also known as upstream. Identifying the exact cause of the interference is often challenging because it isn’t always continuous and may only occur when a particular device is switched on. Therefore, it can take a long time to find the source of the disruption.

How to tackle the problem:

  • Keep your router at least 1 meter away from other electronic devices, including smartphone chargers.
  • Disconnect older devices you no longer use from your antenna socket, such as old radios.
  • Remove antenna cables that are plugged into sockets but not connected to a device, as their open ends can act as antennas that let interference signals into our cable network, thereby disrupting the actual signal.
  • Replace any bent connection cables.

How to assist our technical team:

Our experts check the values of the household distribution system by going door to door to locate the source of the interference. Allow them access to the basement and your apartment. We will notify you before our technical team arrives, and you can recognize them by their company clothing. If unsure, ask for the current case number and their ID.
