Telekom Glasfaser-Modem 2b + FRITZ!Box 5530 with LAN 1 (without MIC)

Hello,
I recently ordered a fiber optic connection from Vodafone along with a rented FRITZ!Box 5530. Because Deutsche Telekom handles the underlying infrastructure in my building, they installed the passive fiber box inside my apartment's metal electrical cabinet.

The Problem: I cannot place the FRITZ!Box 5530 inside the cabinet because it does not fit, and the thick metal door would heavily shield the Wi-Fi signal. Furthermore, there is no opening in the cabinet cover to route a fragile fiber cable outside cleanly.

My Proposed Solution: I want to install an external ONT (specifically the Telekom Glasfaser-Modem 2b) directly inside the electrical cabinet, connect it to the fiber box, and plug its LAN output into my patch panel port. I will then place the FRITZ!Box 5530 in the living room, plugging the wall outlet straight into the router's LAN 1 port.

My Questions:

  1. Will this hardware setup work seamlessly on the Vodafone/Telekom cooperation grid?

  2. Vodafone provided me with a Modem Installation Code (MIC), but my understanding is that the MIC will force a 5530 to look at its own fiber slot. Can I bypass the MIC and use the manual PPPoE credentials (Benutzername/Passwort) provided in my welcome letter along with VLAN ID 7 to make this work over LAN 1?

Thank you for your help!

Technically, this configuration is of course possible. You don't necessarily need the MIC to activate it. This can also be activated manually using the access credentials.

I had a similar setup, only not with the 5530, but with the 4060.

But there is one thing to consider: if problems arise, no one from Vodafone will help you.

Best regards Kurt

Thank you for the reply, but I am looking into this setup purely because of the physical layout of my apartment.

The fiber connection comes out inside a very small, solid metal electrical cabinet. The FRITZ!Box 5530 physically does not fit inside it, and even if it did, the metal door would completely block the Wi-Fi signal to the rest of the apartment. Furthermore, there are no openings in the cabinet cover to route the fiber optic cable outside cleanly.

Since my apartment has built-in network wall outlets, using a tiny external modem inside the cabinet to pass the signal through the walls to the FRITZ!Box in the living room seems to be the only way to avoid a messy cable layout and get a proper Wi-Fi signal. I just wanted to know if the manual credentials would allow it.

@Kurtler thank you so much for the confirmation.
Would VLAN ID 7 work for manual setup or should I use a different VLAN Id? Thanks in Advance!

VLAN ID 7 should be correct for Telekom Fiber-optic cables connections.
