Release Used Router

Hello,

I bought a used cable router to use with O2, but I was told it's a rented router for Vodafone, and I need to request it to be released. I have been told by the seller that the router should not be registered to an active contract. Do I have any options? Would it be possible to release the router from Vodafone? I tried to call customer service, but everything required a customer number, and I'm not a customer.
