Buy a new router or request a contract transfer?

The situation is like this: Me and my roommate are using the router left from the previous resident of my room. He moved out to another city and he's been paying for it for 3 months since I moved in. Three days ago he cancelled the contract and is no longer paying for it. Now when I open a browser, Vodafone page pops out and requests the Kundennummer and the Activation code, in order to activate our router.

My question is: is it possible to transfer his contract(which is cancelled) to me and claim the ownership?

Or should I just get a new router?

no, that is not possible. You must sign a new contract in your name. The cable router from the previous tenant is certainly a loan device, which must also be returned to us.
