Vodafone home visit claiming socket needs updating

Hi,

I am sorry this is in English but I need all the help I can get urgently. I just had two guys come to my door claiming to be from vodafone, wearing vodafone shirts etc. seemed legit to me. I use vodafone cable internet at home. They said the sockets needed updating and needed to check the infrastructure for it. I stupidly allowed them in, they look at the socket, asked for my customer number but they could not find me on their system. Frusturated, they left. Is this a common practice or was I a potential subject for a scam or worse, a burglary bait or anything similar? Please let me know if anyone experienced anything similar.

Usually these guys are only trying to sell you things - they are NOT technicians.

And no, they are NOT from Vodafone - they are all self-employed and make money by just selling contracts.
