If it is a landline contract (cable or DSL), then you have to pay for additional 3 months after leaving Germany in case of a premature cancellation according to the German telecommunications act.
So if you left Germany on August 1st, you'd have to pay for August, September and October...

I had a contract for cellphone with Vodafone and another with Kabel Deutschland for Internet. I notified well in advance the providers about the end of my tour in Germany (as soon as I received the Permanent Change of Station orders).
