Wifi speed for Cablemax 1000 Mbit/s

Hi,

Today I received the router for my Cablemax 1000 Mbit/s contract. I checked the speed using LAN and the Download speed was over 900 Mbit/s and upload was 22 Mbit/s. Then I disconnected the LAN and tried the Wifi, the download speed decreased dramatically to 40 Mbit/s only, The upload speed remains the same.

Before I signed the contract I asked about this point specifically and the answer was the router can manage the 1000 Mbit/s easily.

I don't use the LAN at all, and if I only get less than 50 Mbit/s as a Wifi, then I do not need to pay for the 1000 Mbit/s.

Can you please advise me in this regard.

WIFi and 1Gb won't work. All speed references are based on a LAN connetion.

The WIFI speed is depending how many Antennas your WIFI device does have, environmental conditions like walls etc, distance to the router, reflections etc. Also you have to be connected to the 5Ghz Band. In the 2.GHz Band you will be limited to 300MBits.

For the 5Ghz Band: The connection speed express how quick your connection is between your Router and WIFI device. Normal phones do have one Antenna means max 433Mbits connection speed with two Antennas 866Mbits connection speed and with four Antennas (only in newer PC's) 1733Mbits connection speed.

The connection speed does not mean your max. data throughput.

In practice your data throughput will be the connection speed divide by two.

So the maximum would be 8xxMBits via WLAN for a 4 mu-mimo /Antennas device.

Keep the constrains from the first chapter in mind.

Edit: Your Up speed via LAN seems to be too low.

Thank you Kieferer for your answer.

I tested the WiFi on my laptop while I am settig next to the router. The connection band was 5 Ghz. The speed was only 40 Mbit/s which is less than 5% of the 1 Gb that I pay for. I do understand that through the WiFi I could get less speed but not as low as that.

Before I made the contract I asked Vodafone customer service specifically about the speed that i will get as WiFi (because I read that it will be less than 100 Mbit/s through the router) and the answer was the router will easily manage the 1000 Mbit/s.

Now I will reparaphrase my questions in a better way:

1- How can I reach a reasonable Wifi speed compared with my LAN speed?

2- You said that my LAN speed (about 900 Mbit/s) is low. What I should do to fix this?

3- Finally, since I still in the 14 days period in which I can revoke from the contract, can I change my contract terms to a much lower speed since I mainly use the WiFi in my home and I will not get more 50 Mbit/s?

You will never ever achieve LAN speed via WIFI.
Your upload speed is to low.
What is your expectation, 1GBit via WiFi?

Please read my first chapter at my previous post. There are a lot of constraints regarding WiFi connections.

A good start is to have a look at your WiFi adapter. Pleased check the connected speed at your wlan adapter.

Also other ISP's would not achieve your WiFi speed expectations, since they're the same physics applicable

I meant by a reasonable speed is something about 65% from the LAN speed.

What I want now is to change my contractual speed to 50 Mbit/s since I will not get more as WiFi. This will make my bill half 🙂

A closer position of your WiFi devices to your Router helps. Also try to disable the 2.4GHz Band, so only the 5Ghz Band is active.

A good start is to have a look at your WiFi adapter. Pleased check the connected speed at your PC wlan adapter. Take a screenshot.

I guess - I'm sure - you're connected to the 2.4Ghz Band.

So the data throughput @50MBits is pretty good. Connect to your Router and turn off the 2.4GHz Band.

I turned it off completely.

when I set next to the router I get speed of 250 Mbit/s. At the adaptor it is 433/433

The connection speed does not mean your max. data throughput.

So something about 220Mbit is ok at 433Mbit is ok. Depending on the amount of your Antennas in your WiFi Device and distance to your router your connection speed may increase. If your device won't connect at a higher rate -even you are 10 cm away- then presumably your WiFi device is not capable for higher speeds.

Exactly what I described in chapter one.
